When it comes to games, players have unique and personal opinions. Some people do not care unless it is on Facebook, and other people feel that computer gamers have nothing on console gamers. Then, there are games like I Wanna Be the Guy. This game does not have all the press it deserves, and though it will likely never get it, it remains a great game for a special sort of gamer. Is this the right game for you? Should you even get involved?

What Is It?

At the most basic level, you are looking at a platform jumper. This is a trip in the wayback machine for people who remember pixilated Nintendo games from the eighties, and that is exactly what this game is meant to recall, right down to the story that is explained in the opening scene using purposefully bad English. You are controlling The Kid, who is trying to move forward in his quest to be The Guy. That is really all it is, and you guide the Kid from one side of the screen to the other. This would sound dull if it was not for one thing.

Tough Gameplay

There was an entire generation of gamers who played games where certain things could only be accomplished by a certain specific set of actions, and where a single twitch of the finger could result in the end of the mission and the end of the game. I Wanna Be That Guy takes us right back to that mentality and then turns it up a lot.

This game is not exactly unfair, but sometimes it feels that way. To get through the game, you need to jump at just the right time from just the right place. It requires good timing, good reflexes and a lot of time, because even if you have the first two, you will not be going right through this game on the first, second, third or even fourth play through. This game is tough, and it has been described as a love letter to those early games where we were just expected to suck it up and try again.

Mechanics

Your ability to control the game is navigated through the keyboard. You can do the old double jump, you can shoot, and that's about it. You go from one side of the screen to the other blasting danger out of your way and jumping over or walking under things that you cannot fight. Save screens are a little rarer than might be preferred, and the fact remains, you are going to die, and you are going to die repeatedly.

Who's This Game For?

I Wanna Be the Guy is for gamers who like a challenge, casual gamers who are curious about what it was like in the old days, and people who have nostalgia for a time when a single wrong move could end the game.
